A row has erupted over Haryana Lokhit Party’s Gopal Kanda extending support to the BJP in Haryana, where it is six short of majority. Congratulating the BJP on its performance, senior leader Uma Bharti urged the party to shun the support of Kanda whose political downfall was triggered by a suicide note left by an air hostess with MDLR Airlines. He was accused of rape and abetment to suicide. The rape charge was eventually dropped but within one year, the woman’s mother also committed suicide.
Taking to Twitter, Uma Bharti said the party should not forget its moral foundation. "If Kanda is the same person who was the cause of a girl's suicide, the suicide of her mother and faces trial... whether he is innocent or guilty, the law will decide. But his winning an election does not absolve him. There are many factors in an election victory," Uma Bharti tweeted. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership is divided over taking support of Haryana Lokhit Party’s Gopal Kanda to form government in the state.

The voters of Haryana have given a hung verdict in the assembly election result which was announced on Thursday. Although BJP is the single largest party with 40 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), the party is short of at least 6 MLAs to form government.
With 7 independent MLAs who have won in the state, the party is reaching out to them to help BJP form government. “All independent candidates have extended their unconditional support to BJP. My father was associated with RSS since 1926, fought the first general elections of the country after independence on Jan Sangh ticket," said Gopal Kanda, an MLA from Sirsa assembly seat and member of Haryana Lokhit Party.
